Advanced Metering Infrastructure
Ongoing projects representing nearly 50 millions meters worldwide.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is a system that allows customers’ electricity consumption to be managed remotely. AMI systems use smart meters and communication networks to collect and transmit real-time consumption data. Smart meters provide more accurate and frequent consumption data than traditional mechanical meters.
1.8 millions smart prepaid meters installed in India
EDF international networks India successfully installed and commissioned 1.8 millions smart prepaid meters in the state of Bihar—the country’s first smart metering project with prepaid functionality. The installation process covered two Discoms operating in the state. The project features end-to-end Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), including cloud storage, HES, MDM, and secure IT integration, enabling real-time data processing and analysis.

Our approach
EDF International Networks supports you at every stage of your smart meter project.
Here are the approaches we offer:
- Initial AMI Program Diagnosis: Understand the local context, assess utility challenges, identify key stakeholders
- Program Strategy & Roadmap: Cost-benefit analysis, POC, roadmap, training and strategic workshops
- Solution definition: Design of IT architecture, Formalisation of business processes, Consideration of cybersecurity requirements, Selection of use cases.
- Procurement and purchase management: Drafting of system and hardware specifications, Assistance with the preparation of calls for tender, evaluation processes and supplier selection.
- Project deployment: Equipment qualification & testing, deployment planning & logistics.
- SMOC (Smart Meter Operations Center): Supervision of the communication chain and data management, IT tools.
- Meter data use cases: Development of stakeholders use cases, development of network operation use cases.
- Turnkey project: end-to-end project management (IT, deployment, etc.).
Benefits of AMI solutions for Distribution System Operators
- Increased customer satisfaction through better monitoring and control of their electricity consumption
- Faster detection of faults and faster restoration of service
- Increased operational efficiency through reduced maintenance costs
- Better understanding of the dynamic behaviour of the low-voltage network
- Optimised penetration of renewable energies into the low-voltage network
- Reduced losses through processing and use of meter data
